Have you read the news lately? Crimes, accidents, natural calamities taking time to exchange places. Whether buses or motorcycles, holduppers are regular. All these untoward incidents put fear in our hearts because killers do not issue advance notices.

A loved one experienced this cruelty. His hard earned motorcycle was "driven away" by the expert criminal and this happened in front of an eatery where in fact they were eating and talking. To this day, we have to wait for six months to receive a declaration of non-redemption. The sad part is that we continue paying the motorcycle although we lost it to the robbers. The only hope left is the fact that we were able to choose an insurance that allows us to be given a brand new replacement. It will soon be six months since the "abduction " so expect a blog documenting whether or not the company makes good its promise.

Have you seen these culprits? We rejoice if now and then, we hear some of them caught "in flagrante delicto (caught on the act). In some instances, some have to be hurt or killed because the owner fought for what was his property.

May there be strong vigilance and police presence everywhere in our country, the only christian country in Asia.

With scenarios, like these, can we ever have happy persons? Can you come out of the trauma of being victimized by these able-bodied robbers?

Happy persons, where are you?

One of the pages informs us Dr. Spencer Johnson has written other best sellers, one of which sounds catchy for obvious reason: The One Minute Teacher. In the meantime what came to my hands is "Who Moved My Cheese". Barely 100 pages yet its impact is limitless. Even the sections are easy to grasp: Gathering, the core of the story: who moved the cheese and a discussion. Teachers will surely find this outline very learner-friendly. It took me barely half hour to finish reading it and yet up to now it is still sinking in my consciousness how to "move my own cheese". There are many "Hems" and "Haws" but fewer "Sniffs and Scurrys" but this is not the focus. We, the readers, who live in the real world - not mice and little people definitely - are left with a challenge: to find our way through the maze of life and try to live amidst changing times.

With a plan to come up with an instructional material, this book comes at the most opportuned time. Hopefully, Dr. Johnson can see a copy of it. Also, this blog will carry some of its main insights.ife,

So let us all look for The Minute Teacher - do share what you think of it if you have read it already.

Imagine 2010, USA has a colored president yet one high school has pursued its election of class officers with the main consideration , the color of skin. It comes as no surprise for racial discrimination is here to stay for a long time. Its manifestations are far reaching: language harassment, colorful expressions and what have you.

Is this due to the fact that the world is inhabited by different races? Or is it because a country feels its people has been unjustly treated? Like what happened to Hongkong tourists who came to the Philippines. They were in the last leg of their tour when a certain Rolando Mendoza commandeered their bus and such hostage drama ended with 8 Chinese nationals dead. Now, it seems dangerous for Filipinos to go to Hongkong. This is sad because if there is one place you should never miss to visit, it is Hongkong. Now, everything is done by the two countries to forgive each other for the tragedy. Hongkong has released "black" advisory indicating to it citizens to avoid the Philippines. Hopefully this is not racial discrimination but an unfortunate event of a misguided grievance turn tragic.

While my beloved country is still nursing its pain, Venus Raj, our contestant for Miss Universe placed fifth in the contest. What a most timely joyous event after a most unfortunate blow to one's confidence. Thank you God.

So racial discrimination can come in various ways. People can glare at each other when together in a train or a bus because as we "dress down" each other, we see more differences than similarities. But wait: when an earthquake or an inevitable plane crash is about to happen, each of us can embrace each other for at that moment all of us are helpless. We become human beings who only want to come out of it safe and secure.

Let not our externals override our intention to live harmoniously in this one world of ours. Let us allow the short duration of staying in this planet an opportunity to take care of each other just as this one world of ours remains safe for our stay however short it is.

Is this still true? The teacher is in so you're in good hands. We dare say yes! it is still true. How can it not be? Classrooms around the world are obvious symbols of and/or for learning. Children are still lucky for homes still flourish thanks to parents who are somehow "alter egos" of The Teacher.

There is so much indifference all around us. Sometimes we can understand why. Some tried to overcome it but found it inevitable. Others opted for the lesser evil and began to hate, at least there is still some feeling. Situations, like this, call for the presence of the Teacher. This is where not just any teacher will do but the real one who "walks his talk". Do not feel flustered, there are really many of them.

In this day and age when the young prefer computer games to the usual tete-a-tete, all sectors of society should join hands to balance the development. Then there is the need to become more active in one's church. More specifically, the good decision to offer mass is always good.

Let us all be ready when The Teacher finally comes in for we are graced - we are in good hands!

The

Venus Raj is an inspiring example of the young. While others succumb to depression and/or despair, she accepts the mistakes as challenges. So when she was asked what greatest mistake she had committed and what she had done about it, she responded without hesitation that in her 22 years of existence she has not committed a "major, major one".

Since she said this "double word- major, major "- she became fourth runner-up in the Miss Universe Contest and has launched the Major-Major You tube sensation and blogs that garnered many followers. This the fuzz and what the fuzz is all about.

For most students, being 22 is a time when one is preparing for graduation or has just graduated so it is a stage when life is exciting and is filled with many firsts. The idea of a great mistake does not come yet in the picture. So Venus has a point in claiming she has not committed a major, major mistake. When all things are said and done, Venus will definitely have all the chances to bloom and fulfill her dreams: many major, major tasks that will occupy her attention for a long, long time. To Venus: Congratulations once again!

Introducing:SeeTeachersChron

Once upon a time, SED Chronicle was our newsletter in the College of Teacher Education where Teacher's teacher is a faculty member. Not much happened since its last issue because the passion that used to feed the editorial board just succumbed to indifference.

Then August 23, 2010, a certain Rolando Mendoza held hostage tourists from Hongkong. He used this bus to become a vehicle of airing his grievance against the Ombudsman that ordered him to be relieved of his job after almost 23 years, 2 years short before his retirement. He wanted the Ombudsman to reinstate him before he would decide to call his life quits with what seemed good and carry his demand to his grave. Now his story is a story that could have landed in some or you tube for the world to respond to his plea.

This was the context when Teacher's teacher mustered enough strength to give birth to SeeTeachersChron. Already the website has begun and awaits your comments and/or articles or features.

Sr. Inspector Rolando Mendoza, once a bemedalled policeman later became a hostage taker and finally a murderer and dead.

Mendoza's tragic life gives us a glimpse of what a desperate person is capable of doing to be heard. He was a policeman for three decades - received recognition through the many years of service. Unfortunately , he became embroiled with corruption and so his career ended with all the benefits due him denied him. This was the whole point of his despair - robbery extortion case that ended his career. He wanted to understand why the Ombudsman came to this decision.

Without going into the details, there remains a person in pain, someone who may not be in his proper frame of mind, a person who wants to know why his benefits that come after many years of service will no longer be his and his family's.

This kind of disbelief has bearing when you know of many cases that involve millions only the players are big names in politics or upper echelon in society. Up to now the cases are never filed and so they remain free as free can be. Sorry Mendoza, you are caught!

The other side of the violent scenario are the hostages who came to our country as tourists - tourists. Now Hongkong has labelled our country black - tourist spot. You can almost sense the repercussions this will have for our Filipinos working in Hongkong, many of whom are domestic helpers.

When things are said and done - life goes on and we ask who will follow Mendoza's strategy: hitch ride, announce that it is hostage - taking when one's life is at stake, shield himself with the hostages ultimately death of those who are caught in the crossfire - and death of the hostage-taker.

Now we, the audience who saw the drama unfold on tv, are still asking ourselves and Mendoza: was it worth it?

Would you believe a classmate of mine came to my doorstep - with me not remembering who she was. It was because she looked so professional and sexy at the same time! Expect a photo with the two of us in it and have a grand time deciding who is better looking!!!(Just joking)

2010 minus 1970 equals 40, yes 40 years being apart. This seems to be the trend - the feeling of retracing roots. This visitor of mine literally went around to look for us, her classmates. We decided to have a reunion this coming December. Do you have similar plans with your own batch?

Scenarios, like this, put a smile in my lips and tears in my eyes. Even 40 year separation seems not too long ago. Our features have matured but our warm and candid pleasantries are as alive and rejuvenating as ever it beats any so-called "dope" (not that we have tasted one at all). Then my attention was drawn to the present situation I am in: I really do not feel good with some people in my office. How do you try to cope with his/her presence you do not like at all. In my case, I just offer it as one of my crosses and look constructively at it. After all, five years more to go and I hope to retire and focus my attention to my travels and my garden.

So friends in blogosphere, let us organize ourselves to a support system. Let us comfort each other through our blogs and cope with the travails of everyday living. Word of comfort for me, anyone??? I will look forward to it.

August 21 is Ninoy Aquino's death anniversary so it was meaningful that while we remember a fallen hero, we revive the Girl Clubs of the Scouting Movement!

The event began with Prayer/Reflection followed by Colors, Panunumpa ng Katapatan sa Watawat and Rededication to the Girl Scout Promise and Law. The enthusiastic girl scouts sang the Girl Scout Hymn. Christy Damasco, the Council Executive, presented the participants, guests, consultants and facilitators. Lina Agnes Ocaya Eduave, the Council President, welcomed all who came!

Mrs. Lourdes A. Ouano, Provincial Nurse I shared with the girl scouts important points about Adolescent Reproductive Health. It was a timely topic to discuss what with so many young girls who seem to have boyfriends as early as twelve years old. The others even unfortunately become pregnant in their high school years! Hopefully, the participants became more aware of the choices that protect their future and decide to follow their dreams to become professionals.

Reina S. Aserios and Ana Ninfa B. Caballero, facilitators of Senior/Cadet Planning Board and Junior Journalists Guild; Radio/TV Club and Ham Radio Club respectively grouped the girl participants according to their choices what organizations to belong to. Do visit www. girlscoutsbukidnon.org to know who the elected officers were.

From Bukidnon State University, College of Teacher Education, the following cadets came: from National Service Training Program-Literacy Training Service component T7:30 class- Karen Joy Anay, Junalyn Tande, Regin Cartin, Lady Fatima Villegas, Mary Grace Habasa, Trisha Bandao, Karleen Jezza Gasper, Chiel Alvarado, Cherrilyn Gumban and Vanessa Mangasto; T1:30 class -Julie Ann Ugtal, Demi Marie Visto, Cleah Datoy, Janessa Libre, Rose Angelie Ampong, Hazel Charmaine Liman-ay,Chedette Hope Magayano, Hannah Lou Balandra and Sarah Mae Bildo.

With happy volunteers, the Girl Scouting Movement lives on!!!

My teaching career began in 1972 and I agree that more than thirty years later, I remain a student. This has become more transparent now that the internet has caught us unprepared. Some of us who lived with the "typewriter expertise" have to shift gear and painfully try to keep pace with computer technology.

The experts aptly share the thought: "Once a teacher, always a student." I hasten to add: Furthermore, a teacher is parent, facilitator, planner, instructor, evaluator rolled into one. No wonder they declare teaching as the noblest deed!

Fellow mentors , seize your moment and claim the recognition due you.

Fellow bloggers especially those who take time to read my blogs - a special comebacking hello!!!
Here goes Teacher's teacher once again rejuvenated and hoping to remain more present than absent. Certainly you can identify with some of my angst??!

Have you ventured into the "unknown"? Have you begun asking questions we refuse to entertain, mainly because they delve with mortality? Well, that seems to be my preoccupation all these many occasions of staying away.

So do share with Teacher's teacher what your experiences are along this line.

Thus far, life does look very precious nowadays especially since reaching the fifty plus ten sphere.

By the way, we have been smitten by Plants vs. Zoombies that my hours were spent overcoming these monsters. It keeps us asking how creative the creators of this game are. Who are you? Congratulations for such an exciting yet "teeth-grinding" sessions. Any tip how to play the levels shorter? It seems the "try again" has been overly done again and again our hands are over fatigued. Yet over and above our complaints, here we go - am interested to "kill the zoombies" even now.

So back to the more pressing matter of living, how are you coping?

Imagine, all these years we have tried to have a family photo session. . . it never materialized because it was just too luxurious . . . seemingly elitist. . . almost only for the rich and famous. Then my youngest son (find his website as Bon Aserios.com) became a professional photographer himself! Now all my preconceived notions are things in the past for today, we have our very first family session with our very own professional photographer. Proof fotogs? be excited - next blog. . .

So what is the significance of a family photo session anyways? For one, it is your family and good or bad, when your children become adults and are working in their own fields, to draw them all in one spot is like a miracle. The family photo then is one excellent proof that one time everyone was present and was properly documented. Absent is their father who died last 1998 but in spirit, he is very much felt. Like our first pet(Japanese spitz), Michael I who died few years ago and now Michael II(poodle-spitz) has replaced him. Excited to see him? Well, next blog please.

Secondly, photos last a lifetime so family photos will really be a meaningful reminder of your closeness.

Thirdly, it can become a last chance to see each other as single adults. I still do not have a grandchild so if one of my four children will decide to tie the knot, the photo is there for their own kids!

Lastly, it is a document of the greatness of Lorenzo Paul Boni who seems to have inherited all the best from his father's photography.

Last May 25, 1981 the Patriarch of the Sabana clan returned to his Maker. Later, June 18, 1990, the Matriarch died. As orphans, the eight (8) siblings held on to family unity through their love and care for each other. Their eldest, Engineer Renz served as their anchor and leaven so through the many years, the clan held on to each other.

It was but appropriate then that when the new home of Malaybalayan and Teacher's teacher became a reality - May 25 was a good date to bless it. Expect some photos to vouch for this.

Death anniversaries are solemn moments while house blessings are joyous events. In the case of Malaybalayan and Teacher's teacher, her family learned from both occasions life's realities: pain and blessing. Over and above, the family celebrates the life of each one now made more meaningful having found their niche in this simple, small but love-filled home.

After a hiatus, here's Teacher's teacher coming back with a bang! Teaching and Non-Teaching personnel of Bukidnon State University, Malaybalay, Bukidnon Philippines went on an educational field trip. From Teacher's teacher a sincere thank you to the Board of Regents-particularly to Dr. Victor M. Barroso, BSU president.

Some highlights: It was a trip that was both gratifying and dissatisfying. The so-called tourists were treated to various kinds of food but not to well worth seeing tourist spots. Unfortunately, the food that was served was not of the best kind so much so the others availed of it because it was served but not to savor and enjoy. The so-called scenic spots did not give justice to what tourism hopes to instill in the minds of travellers. Since the package was meant to educate, questions crop up: Was the trip meant to make good its promise to broaden the horizons of the employees and really to use the opportunity to learn and "feel good" and resolve to do better as a member of the BSU community? Will there be an evaluation after every batch of tourists so that the next time - if ever there is another one - will be better organized, scrutinized and honestly crafted? Were there others - the chosen ones - who availed of the funds intended for every employee but used it to go on an Asian tour package instead of the Pampanga-Tagaytay Philippines package? Why? Why? Why? What is the real score about it? Where is transparency? Will this always be the case because they are the chosen ones? When will this end??? Who will account for the amount allotted for each employee? Are we entitiled to know where money went? who received what? Are we to expect that when we comment like this, we will no longer expect educational trips? Will there be repercussions when the real score has to be dealt with?

Still appreciation is due where it should be - after all not every institution has this privilege. Amidst undertakings, there are always good and not so good aspects so when things are said and done, thanks goes to the people who made the educational trip possible. Someday, Teacher's teacher will write again and hopefully by then, the educational trip will live up to what it is envisioned to be. . .

Calling all those concerned who were part of the educational trips: first, second or third batch - feel free to give additional feedback. Are you brave enough?

On our part, the educational trip began when Teacher's teacher met Mindanaoan after April 25 and the grand experiences continued up to April 30. Open Malaybalayan.com for the details.

Kaamulan is a yearly celebration in Bukidnon, Philippines. "Kaamulan" is a Bukidnon term for "gathering". We have so many reasons to gather especially these days when "election fever" is upon us and more importantly when all my children have come home to witness the "Street Dancing" competition on March 6, 2010 and to be together as a family.

What used to be ordinary situation when our children are under our care, their presence is easy to expect. It becomes more difficult when one by one they graduate and find their "place in the sun". They leave "the nest" and prefer to stay in bigger cities where they rent a room and live independently. Gone are the days when they can come home anytime because they have their own commitments. While all these changes are happening, we cannot but just pray for their safey and success in all their undertakings.

Now we wonder no more because this is the path we also went through before we became parents ourselves. In the meantime, Teacher's teacher just wants to savor these few days of togetherness, no money can compensate.

Let this "Kaamulan 2010" become your "Kaamulan" too.

At a time when cynicism and indifference have become the citizen's reaction to what is happening in society, the ruling of the Supreme Court in the Philippines to consider the appointed officials deemed resigned once they run for political post, is timely. This way, the politicians cannot use their present status as an edge over the opponents. Now, there is equal playing field. The administration did not waste time of course and filed for reconsideration.

The aforementioned situation should not have reached the Supreme Court. The ones concerned should have taken upon themselves the initiative to resign but they did not, so a concerned citizen had to risk and filed the case. We really need this kind of "watch dog" and we hope they will multiply their kind nowadays.

Let us be vigilant!

Today, we went to Musuan, Bukidnon, Philippines to condole with the grieving family of Laura Dumaguit Obsioma. Janett, her husband Jess and her son, Alaine, were my companions. When we arrived, Laura's husband, Rudy, told us how our classmate died. It was unexpected since almost everyone vouched they just spoke with her; but we know death is really like a "thief in the night" such that we go when our time is up.

In our conversation we brought up why we did not see each other more often. Yes, this is one thing we seem to forego due to our busy schedule. Perhaps, we can give this more thought and consider it for future reference: visit a friend, especially someone you would normally not seek out. During this Lenten season, it can be one way to make peace with God.

Laura, my high school classmate, you met us with your unique smile when we viewed your earthly body. We sensed you were happy to see Janett and I visit you and offer prayers for you. Classmate, do pray for us too.

Eternal rest grant unto Laura O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace. Amen.

At last, the Filipino World War II Veterans, now old and grey, received their lump sum benefit from the United States government. At least, each veteran would receive approximately half a million pesos or 13,000 dollars (7.2 billion dollars paid by the US government for all of them).

Did you see some of the veterans who came to beat the deadline? We hope each of them was able to claim. To see them come-some already in wheelchairs or too old to even come alone - gripped our hearts with empathy/sympathy for them. We could not help but ask: "Did it have to be given after so many years of waiting?" "Would it be just not to give any amount to the lawful spouse of the veteran-after all these years"? "Would this be another matter of indirectly being told - complain no more, be happy you received something" - Lump Sum Benefit, better late than never at all.

So even with hesitation we thank the US government just the same.

To the WWII veterans, we are happy for you. We may not have done anything to fight for your fight but we know you deserve all the acknowledgment and admiration for all your heroism. History would vindicate you and God knows too well whom to reward and providentially the other kind of payment in His heaven would be more than all the dollars or pesos in the world.

God bless heroes!

This multicab was our vehicle as we launched our immersion activities in Sunflower, Kalasungay, Bukidnon. In fact when we arrived in the purok, there was a meeting. We were given enough time by the purok leader to introduce ourselves and the rationale behind our visit.

During the immersion experience, the NSTP-Literacy Training Service students asked the question: are we ready to travel trough life's ups and downs? Teacher's teacher hopes to share the learning insights of her students anytime soon.

In the meantime, may we also ask you, fellow bloggers-readers: Are you ready yourselves? With El Nino and all other financial constraints that get in the way to make our lives more bearable, we have to hold on to our faith. Always be anchored with God for with Him, everything is possible.

A text message just reached me from a loved one telling me she is very tired as she goes about her job. All I could advice was to remain positive, hold on to God's saving grace.

So, ready for life's ups and downs? On our own, we can never be but with God's help, we muster the guts to say: Welcome life!

While "El Nino" is not a new phenomenon in the Philippines and its devastation already felt in the past, it is still unbelievable when it is here to prove its power. The news has cited many agricultural areas that looked arid and the crops stunted or its harvest below the usual expected limit.

While this is happening with the weather, our attention is caught when the Commission on Election (COMELEC) tells the movie stars to file leave of absence if they endorse politicians or face jail time. Some big names like Kris Aquino and Boy Abunda expressed their concern for such a curtailment and requested for broader understanding. ANC discussed this further in Media in Focus and Adel Tamano was one of the guests who shared that while Ogie Alcasid endorsed him as Senator the actor was not paid. Consequently, COMELEC ruled that this ban will depend on the network where the stars work.

So our weather is hit by "El Nino" while our politicians are hit by "COMELEC". Hopefully, the weather will improve through the arrival of rain and cloud seeding; the politicians avail of the services of the movie and tv stars as the latter are filipinos too and have their own freedom of expression.

We will follow this up with more discussion. We have up to before May 10, 2010!

Have you experienced days when you just feel empty? This was my feeling for so many days now so Teacher's teacher decided to take a much needed break. Now we are refreshed and raring to go. . .

Still, let us pursue the matter of emptiness. Why do we feel it once in a while?

We have learned the hard way how to cope and with God's guidance we managed to bounce back. But the way through was like "dying" to one's pride. Such that even Valentine's Day cannot ease your pain but it can strengthen your resolve to still love amidst the pain.

So, here we are again and please let us know how you managed to overcome your own perils. Belated Happy Valentine's Day friends. Let us move on to better days. . .

Malaybalayan, the Teacher, glances at her plaques and she quips, except for her 20 year service in Ateneo de Davao University, all the rest comes from the Girl Scouts of the Philippines.

Now, Malaybalayan is the Vice-President for Field in Bukidnon Council, Girl Scouts of the Philippines.

Who is teaching? Who are listening?
Malaybalayan, the teacher, was invited to talk to parents. Their children were invited by the student teachers to play outside the
classroom.
Barangay Early Childhood Project is part of the extension program of the College of Teacher Education, Bukidnon State University.

Corazon Cojuanco Aquino, first woman President of the Republic of the Philippines, is remembered today, if alive, is now 77 years old. It was during her presidency that freedom was restored to the Filipino people. She died after a battle with cancer but left as her legacy an administration that was not tainted with corruption. "A Woman Dressed in Sunshine" is how Swatch described Tita Cory in its limited edition of watches.

Throughout the day, around 400 masses were celebrated in Tita Cory's honor. A huge statue was sculpted to remember a prayerful woman president, loving mother and faithful wife to the late Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino, Sr. Ninoy was assassinated himself when he came back to the Philippines to run as president against his opponent, then Ferdinand Marcos. Ninoy was famous for his faith in the Filipino people: "The Filipino is worth dying for."

At the present time, just when there will be elections on May 10, 2010, the only boy among the children of Ninoy and Cory, Senator Benigno Aquino, Jr. "Noynoy" is running as President of the country.

Today however, is only about Tita Cory who is an icon of democracy and for the catholics, an icon when it comes to praying the rosary all throughout her life especially in moments of trials and tribulations. Tita Cory, Teacher's teacher finds in you an epitome of motherhood and womanhood. Happy 77th birthday even if we know you are already happy with your Maker.

At dawn the days begins . . .

Just when it seems nothing moves except nature
Just when the stillness is broken only by your care
Just when the day is about to break to be born
There you are, your life begins.

Who can tell you how you will manage?
To start anew and change your image?
Already I can see you will pretend to smile
As if you have not gone a mile.

Yet you stay strong as though a stone
Like a robot you moved on
For how long nobody can tell
At least today you came to call.

Perhaps for you, it is enough . . . after all, life begins anew at dawn . . .

Sometimes we call money the root of all evil and to a certain extent it is true. As we go on living however, we learn that money is part of living and somehow life looks good when you have money than when you do not have money. By now we realize it is not how much we have but that at least we have money of our own.

There is a situation we always experience when we pity ourselves because we have to ask for money to buy your provision. So when the opportunity arises and you have extra cash to put away, do so. Make sure you have money you can truly call your own.

Let your very painful dilemmas become your teacher so you will have all the push to make good your plan to become independent. Even if your children who are grown can be expected to give you cash, include in your desire to save to have money you can spend the way you like it and keep some the way you want it.

This early therefore, make sure you have put away some money you can truly call your very own no matter what!

In fact, it is not only in Haiti but right here in our own places too. It is Haiti that is the focus of attention now because two weeks after Haitians experienced 7.0 earthquake and the succeeding aftershocks, people died, thousands of them, and all the basic things are nowhere to be had. Donations come from all over the world yet up to the present the question remains: where are all of it? Are the most vulnerable receiving aid at a time when it is most needed? Why is there looting? Why do people kill each other for food even when the vehicle carrying it is in sight?

The sad imagery speaks of the bigger things that happen. In the first place, the government does not seem to function systematically. Although our observation may not be accurate but we can not avoid but comment how CNN and United Nations seem to be the ones running the show and telling the world what is happening to Haitians- especially the children and the old.

The glimmer of hope remains ignited because while we see the almost unbearable sufferings of the victims still they sing, pray, smile or say thank you to the rescuers; the medical mission/volunteers go on working day and night unmindful of their own health and safety. One volunteer recounted how she could hardly wash her hands after rescuing so many wounded patients because there was no water much less alcohol or hand sanitizer.

We, the onlookers over tv, can only pray for the Haitians, for all the volunteers and well meaning donors. Please God, bless all of them. We hope to send some financial aid in our own little way.

BSU Extension Unit meets ALS.

The extension unit of Bukidnon State University, Malaybalay, Bukidnon, Philippines, through its very active and ever resourceful director, Dr. Estela Itaas, initiated the move to hold Basic Literacy Seminar-Workshop. This was made possible when the Supervisor of Alternative Learning Systems of Region XI, Mrs. Helen Arancon spent one whole day with the BSU extensionists on January 23, 2010, Saturday, at the Media Resource Center in BSU.

All the participants, Malaybalayan included, had only positive feedbacks upon hearing from the resource speaker all the intricacies that come with genuine Basic Literacy Training given to out-of-school youth and adults. The next move therefore is to hold literacy mapping after floating the Community Needs Assessment Questionnaire. This way we, the extensionists can respond accurately to the need and level of the clientele.

Interesting to note was the clarification that formal education and alternative learning systems are of equal footing. Now there is a clear attempt to provide Education for all.

Expect some documentation when my students in National Service Training Program-Literacy Training 2 will launch its meeting with the community leaders in Sunflower, Kalasungay, Bukidnon Philippines.

BSU-Extension Unit met ALS at a time when the need to immerse the students to the community and experience first hand the rare opportunity to become men and women for others presented itself.

Experts differentiate mere teachers from effective teachers like this: "Teachers, like leaves, abundantly abound; effective teachers, like fruits, are rarely found." On one hand, there are many who finished the degree in teaching and so they they teach. On the other hand, effective teachers are those who imbibe in their teaching, the vocation which demands from them extra time and effort- always go a mile more to explain, to tutor if there is need, to be of service.

We advance then that the former is plain teacher while the latter is an educator.

Teacher's teacher hopes to meet other educators through this blogspot. Please post a comment and inform us how to contact you. May your tribe increase!

We woke up this Friday morning, January 22 and as we viewed GMA, Marlene Aguilar IvlerPollard, the mother of Jason Ivler, began sharing what she can say how her son has been unjustly treated, as though already proven guilty instead of being considered innocent before any trial. She also insinuated that her bodyguard who is British, can also be a suspect in the whole thing, can be the informer who now is given the reward money and so on and so forth.

Usually when someone shares her "hearts" out on primetime tv, especially a mother, we reach out through our tears and sadness but in this case, we got migraine! As Undersecretary Renato Ebarle Sr., the father of the victim allegedly shot by Jason Ivler said in response to what we saw and heard, Marlene Pollard is "the best actress". Personally, we agree.
,
Thus, we can learn from all the things that are happening in our surroundings. But most of all, we should go back to our own family: make sure we know what they are doing, where they are. At least most of our homes are not mansions or situated i n a 1,000 sq. or so meter stretch of land so we can readily see each other!

George Santayana declares: "Family is one of nature's masterpieces." We, the mothers, have so much to do right there in our families. All of us have a lifetime to finish our masterpieces, our respective families.

Cerge Remonde is a "fixture" on tv since he became Press Secretary of Malacanang . For us who are from the Visayas and Mindanao we are elated because he represents what some of us can achieve if we do well in our jobs. Visayans seem to excel in whatever field they go into and especially when they try their luck in Manila, Philippines.

My daughter, for example, is appointed as Media Chief of Adel Tamano for Senator Movement. Yes! Adel Tamano for Senator Movement - please do not forget!!!

Back toCerge Remonde, we are beginning to hear how generous he was as a person and how fair he tried in his dealing with the media personnel. His peers spoke of his diligence and persistence and they knew he would go places which he did.

To Cerge Remonde, our prayers. Our children will find in you the picture of tenacity and excellence. Rest in peace . . .Our condolences to the bereaved family. . .

It is not difficult to understand why mothers love their children. Others say: but of course! The moment the mom becomes pregnant, the unique relationship between the mother and the child is uniquely theirs. This special bond blossoms more deeply as the baby is born and once again, the extent of mother-child relationship is all embracing.

No wonder then children are better when with mothers than without them. A mother's love is a love beyond compare. It is an epitome of unconditional love. Yet, can it ever be questioned as something "destructive" or love that "spoils" or "stifles" the growth of the child?

Mothers out there, this is the topic that has surfaced as we see and hear Marlene Aguilar Ivler, mother of Jason Ivler to the extent of going against the law and is now facing the charge: obstruction of justice. This happened when Marlene allowed her son to hide in their home while the law was looking for her son to face the charge of shooting a certain Ebarle,Jr. We also hear Marlene declare that however the world will call her son, monster or any other description, no one can diminish the fact that she loves Jason with all her being. Is the love of Marlene, the mother, towards her son, Jason, what we mean by a mother's love, an epitome of unconditional love?

Malaybalayan invites you, especially mothers, to comment. We are aware we cannot judge anybody but we can learn from each other's love stories.

In times of great distress we utter things we really regret after giving it much thought. We forget most of the time that "much is expected from people who receive much". Who are these persons we label as having received much and from whom?

They are the achievers who go through every undertaking with ease. Sometimes they develop the talent to excel through the help of tutors or keen follow-up from supportive parents or sponsors.

Then there are the generic geniuses who just astound us with their inherent gifts of excellence that even the ones concerned cannot claim it to come just from their own genes. This is an instance of pure gift from the Almighty which we cannot question but just acknowledge.

Then, also included are the teachers and other servants of the law who are given the mission to "lift up" the minds of the young and hopefully someday, the young will take their rightful place in society and take care of the world in turn for the perpetuation of mankind.

Then there is in fact every man and woman of whatever race, status or culture from whom a unique gift has been bestowed by the Maker from whom each one of us ultimately will go home to. To each of us therefore, much is expected for each of us has received much.

For a long time we have accepted this theory that "Experience is the best teacher". For the sake of discussion, let us analyze it. To a great extent, experience is the best teacher because many of us learn quickly from our achievements and failures. With achievements we learn how to go about maintaining excellence so that quality is obvious. With our failures we assess and decide what to improve and plan to do things better.

The other point that surfaces is the experience itself. Sometimes,we label one an experience when what just happened is an abstraction. It is a way out of it, the reality to avoid the experience.

This is where, after all, we pause and accept: "Experience indeed is the best teacher." What we have tried is an experience of difficulty in trying to negate the statement which after all, is.

Catastrophes, announced and unannounced, have become man's reminders that we are still on earth. Through these disasters the best of man's generous trait is shown. Like the one in Haiti, where no less than the two previous US presidents, Bill Clinton and George Bush launch a Fund Raising for Haiti - this diplomatic endeavor made possible with the invitation coming from the incumbent United States President, Barack Obama! You cannot find it somewhere else except in USA.

The on-going rescue operations also manifest how all the other counties have come to help: Cuba, China, Spain, among others, became one in helping all for goodwill. It is another reminder that we are in one earth. To help Haiti is also to help the world for Haiti is the way the other half of the world is living.

One shocking commentary: dead bodies litter in the streets of Haiti, dogs are "eating" or "attacking" it. If your insides do not "revolt" when you hear this, nothing can. So for us who may not be able to help financially now try to do so, however minimal and together let us pray that Haiti will survive this calamity. Filipinos too should include their six (6) countrymen who are also trapped under damaged buildings. Already the Philippine government has sent a contingent to aid them.

In the end: We are all our brothers' keepers.

The earthquake that hit Port-Au-Prince, Haiti has come and gone but its after effects are just being felt and its destruction surfacing. CNN has heartbreaking images of victims who nearly died and are now with their loved ones; images of victims who are still being caught by the rubble that to look at them, tears your heart apart; flock of people who sits anywhere still recovering from the shock.

One poignantly related how she and her brother went about their task to teach literacy when the earthquake came upon them. Her brother ran and was able to escape but she slipped so she was trapped and for 50 hours remained stuck because there were no equipments to pull her. When finally she was pulled out, she saw her right leg already lifeless and had to be cut off. Still she thanked God for being alive and expressed fear for others who may not have received the same medical attention that had.

France, China,Cuba and United States are the first responders in giving aid. Would you believe there are those who exploit the situation? They ask for financial aid for the earthquake victims but in fact the money is channeled for personal purposes.

The Philippines can learn from the experience of Haiti. Being an archipelago, earthquakes can be tectonic in origin which refers to the "fault" which our country has and traverses from Mindanao to the Visayas up to some portions in Luzon.

In Haiti, 2 to 3 millions are declared dead or wounded. It is so tragic and emotional that the dead cannot be accomodated in the cemeteries because of number. CNN has mentioned that there are still dead bodies on the streets of Haiti! In the cemeteries too, there were not enough caskets or the family cannot afford to buy one so the dead bodies were just dumped.

Some foods for thought: "Death is truly like a thief in the night; it comes when it is least expected." Like earthquakes, it comes anytime and the victims are the last ones to know whether or not they can be spared or their time has come.
Our bodies are sacred because man is made in the image and likeness of God. The casket need not be expensive but at least there should be some semblance of respect given to the bodies, however poor they look like.

News that breaks our hearts

The most recent is the catastrophic earthquake, intensity 7.0 that hit Port-Au-Prince Haiti. This was followed by more than 20 aftershocks. According to CNN, a hospital collapsed followed by other buildings. United States, through its Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Hillary Clinton offered international aid. Haiti's European partners in Brussels are expected to help immediately.

What breaks our hearts are the faces of the wounded, the children, the mothers who are shown running and looking for their other loved ones. Since Haiti is considered the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, we, from the Philippines, know too well what happens when not much is expected from the government but from generous people who come to their aid.

The next news that tugs our heart is the slow recovery of the dead bodies that have been trapped in MV Catalena, the boat that sank last December. There were 5 bodies that were recovered.

What breaks our hearts are the hidden faces of the families who must still be painfully waiting for the bodies of their loved ones to be found. This is complicated by the fact that the bodies will have to undergo forensic investigation to find out the scientific data who the dead bodies are.

Then there is the second hearing of the Ampatuan murder case. While Mayor Unsay Ampatuan gives attention to the pain caused by the handcuffs; the families of the victims hold their breaths as the details are now said in court. Already, the narration of the prosecution's witness is denied by the defense as can be expected. At least, the case has taken off. In the meantime, demonstrators demand that the hearing be seen on tv because 57 families and the whole country hope to hear firsthand what is being said.

What breaks our hearts are the tensions and anxieties of many parties which want justice given sooner than later. When there is an attempt from the lawyers to disprove what has been said by the witness because he seemed sure that his clients are not guilty, our hearts bleed. When those who lost their wife, husband, children, friend, sit in court believing that when everything is done, justice will be theirs.

We pray less of news that breaks our hearts and have more of news that makes the world more the creation the Maker has envisioned it to be and become.

While we acknowledge that suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty, we still cannot fathom why Andal Ampatuan, exudes so much confidence that he is innocent with 57 families who truly believe he is not. You look hard as he speaks and he projects the face of someone who has no problem at all. This is the reality of due process of law: evidence, judges, lawyers, affidavits, counter affidavits, money, time . . .

We just have to continue praying that while the wheels of justice keep on turning, its pace should be a little faster before the deaths of 57 victims will be put to waste. Our hearts go to their families whose lives are forever changed.

We are left asking, wondering when the turn of events will be such that gradually those who must be made accountable will be known and named.

So, we just keep on following the case, at least on tv, and pray, from where we are situated that the God of Justice will work, through the witnesses, the miracle of Truth will come out that only God can evoke from the guilty because his conscience will not give him rest.

Our visit to Hongkong-Zhenzen and Macau China made us see the world beyond Malaybalay, Bukidnon, Philippines. In those four days our perceptions became broader and opened our eyes to what could be done to tell the world about Bukidnon which is also ladened with natural wonders.

The blue hat or cap Malaybalayan wore was left behind, probably in one of the restaurants where we ate. Could this mean we could go back to Hongkong someday? any possible sponsors out there?

Since our memorable and fantastic journey we became more excited and interested to visit other Asian countries like Singapore, Malaysia or Thailand. Any tips how to go about our future destinations?

Many things surfaced since Michael Jackson's death. Economists say Michael's worth is much more after his death than when he was alive. Teacher's teacher cannot help but comment: does it matter? Those who love Michael want him alive not dead. We saw the film: This is it and truly you would never ever have an inkling he needed Propofol to feel well. And now, the person who did his bidding, his doctor, Dr. Conrad Murray faces charges of involuntary manslaughter.

Speaking from the point of view of a fan, it is really painful to learn many years later that Michael suffered burns while taping a softdrink commercial. How we wish the tape was shown to the fans so that the "quirks" Michael showed were better understood. It is now "water under the bridge" so let us allow Michael to rest in peace.

As regards the doctor, he could take care of himself. His defense would rely mostly on the intention he had because in the court of law one's motive could make or unmake one's case.

What is left is for the family to move on. The children's welfare should be uppermost in their minds. For us fans, sometimes, the memory of excellence we saw in the stars we looked up to inspire us to do our best while time is all we have.

Cynicism has become a common trait of modern man. Am sure the cynics who are watching the on-going procession today, January 9, (Saturday) of 2.4 - 3 million Filipinos, from Quirino Grandstand to Quiapo are wondering why there are so many who join it. This is not to say that even those who aren't cynics do not have the same reaction. So we ask: why are their devotees who go to such length whether for the Black Nazarene or another feast like Easter?

One explanation: Believers express their faith not only through word but through action as well especially when the feast is being celebrated. When Pope Paul VI came to the Philippines in the '70's, we, the catechists, began our vigil for the Pope's visit at dawn. When the Vicar of Christ was finally in front of us - of me - I cried and cried with joy. My feeling was that Jesus appeared before me. This leads us to the next point.

Second explanation: Filipinos, once they put their heart, are willing to die for the cause. They sometimes forget the danger that may arise. In this procession, a number got hurt, 400 plus have been hospitalized. So far, two died. Such fervor perhaps can be redirected for something more productive.

Third explanation: Today is only one day so I join some analysts who acknowledge the beautiful expression of one's faith but after the procession, what is next? Will the believers go back to their usual routine? Is their devotion part of their daily means of livelihood? If it is, then one's devotion to the Black Nazarene is indeed faith in action.

Let us not forget that God is not only felt during procession but in the most ordinary experience of life. The Statue of the Black Nazarene is a statue but the faith of the devotee goes beyond the statue and experiences the symbol who is Jesus, the Nazarene. We have only to look around to see the faces of the members of our family. Do you take care of their needs if you are a parent? If you do, it is as though you have your own procession too which lasts a lifetime.

The President of Bukidnon State University, Dr. Victor Melendez Barroso, is turning 65 years old on January 12. Today, January 8, he has invited all the teachers to have snacks with him and his family, his better half, Dr. Remedios T. Barroso at his side. While this is being done every time our president celebrates his birthday, this time it will be different because he will be reaching some crossroad: life beyond 65 and an extended stint still as President of BSU!

Birthdays are reminders of the time we were born; how far we have done with the years of our life and with the remaining years, if gifted with more, view it as "new leashes of life" for the better. It should also be a time to "pay forward" in any way. As we are already well aware, some do not look at birthdays this way such that they remain the cranky, selfish and uncooperative persons they have always been before their birthdays.

To celebrants, therefore, Teacher's teacher dedicates some excerpts of a poem which state:

"Today, well lived, makes every yesterday, a dream of happiness and every tomorrow a vision of hope. Look well therefore to this day. Such is the salutation to the dawn."

Sometimes we tell God how unfair He can be. Here is a girl, who is beautiful, graduate of a university in France, a model, an actress, the daughter of Sharon Cuneta. How can she have so much while many can hardly go to school, does not have a job if by chance she finished a course because she has no connection . . .? Then we hear and see that this lady gifted with so much wants to pay forward by extending her commitment as United Nation's World Food Programme national ambassador against hunger. Good decision KC. . .

With very few role models our young people can look up to, we are happy to note KC Concepcion Cuneta Pangilinan is doing her share. It is worth noting that we are in fact doing our share too, though not as publicized as KC's is. If you are a volunteer, keep up the good work.

Efren Penaflorida, CNN Hero of the Year, is a filipino, who tells us candidly he did not begin the "push cart school" but that he had good mentors who helped him follow the better path and so he volunteered his time to continue the "push cart" school while being aided to finish his education in Cavite State University. In the acceptance speech of Efren during the Award ceremony for the ten heroes, he encouraged us to "unleash the hero within us" for each of us is a hero and together we can become the change.

To my students in Peace Education and NSTP 2 (Community Immersion) you are now given the opportunities to "unleash" the hero that each of you truly is. Seize the Day!!!

Johnson products are noted for its wholesome ads: mother-child photo with the mom putting Johnson powder all over the baby's body as manifestation of tender loving care; family using Johnson products: shampoo, lotion, cotton and many more. Yet, the heir of Johnson & Johnson, Casey Johnson, the lady who has everything, dies at 30. While we do not have the power to judge Casey, we are left wondering why she had a history of drug problems and why even her relationship was that of another woman. . .

This is another human story which tells us very vividly that our aspirations are basically the same. One can be rich but the desire for belongingness and love are the same with someone who is financially challenged. Wealth or fame does not determine our happiness. Everything we possess should only be used as means never ends.

Thus, Casey may have everything financially speaking but perhaps she did not have the emotional and pychological support that come only with families who give quality time to family gathering and one-on-one follow-up. Just the same, Casey is a fellow pilgrim who needs our prayer and plea for her eternal repose with her God.

As a mother, it is painful to hear from your child that there are relatives who blemish the name of the clan by being a gossip, a rumor mongerer and pinhead (you can add to the list). Trusting that in time the "truth will always come out" and that the "truth always sets us free", you hear your child relate that this time this relative who is a gossip, rumor mongerer, pinhead personified is no longer connected with the office mainly because her presence was more a liability than an asset. There were occasions when the protector in me wanted to wage that "war" in behalf of my child. Then, the teacher and fifty plus in me were enough to stop the "evil plan". To let the scenario, expand, you hear your child share that there are employees, either from the province or the city, who do not spend their time paid by tax payers' money accordingly; for the gossip, rumor mongerer and pinheads among them use office time just to gossip, rumor monger or act as pinhead. To make matters worse, these people include your child among their victims and once again, we, the parents would like to attack these bad elements and give them their own dosage of harm and destruction. Once again, the educated side of us gets the better of our hot temper and offer it as part of life's trial."Vengeace is not ours for the law of karma prevails."

For the sake of discussion and reflection, ask yourself: Are you the gossip, the rumor mongerer or the pinhead we are referring to? If you are, ask again: Why are you one? We tell you now, this 5th of January 2010, you might no longer be lucky next time. If I were you, change your ways and even in silence, ask forgiveness from God,maybe not yet to the person you have hurt and in time, the wounds you have inflicted may just heal.

2009 is a long gone, let 2010 be a new beginning: "Go placidly amid the noise and haste and remember what peace there may be in silence . . . Keep peace with your soul. With all the sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy."

For quite a number of years now, Teacher's teacher is able to receive a calendar from Land Bank through Rica Joy Guillermo Aguilar. The bank's calendar is always displayed in prominent places because its design is really well thought of. It is no wonder then that the calendar of 2010 is another piece of art. Have you seen it?

For us in the academe especially those who teach Peace Education, Agriculture and its related fields, Social Studies, perhaps Literature, can find in this year's calendar a good instructional material. On its cover it states: " . . . Landbank's 2010 calendar takes us to the heart of some of the country's forests to give us a closer view of six species of trees commonly grown - in our hopes to encourage one and all to plant and propagate trees of every kind. . . Landbank urges us to listen closely to the murmurs echoing in the country's forests and heed their call for preservation; for if we only do as much as listen to the wind, we would hear them beckoning us to do our share."

Teacher's teacher has a son who is a photographer (Remember the blog in Malaybalayan where www.BonAserios.com photographs Malaybalayan?) so we will solicit his feedback about the healthy seedling which stands small at the moment and gradually grows tall, taller and tallest either as Narra, Agoho,Mahogany, Mangium, Bagras or Falcata trees.

The quotations cited by Landbank are worth noting: "There is always music amongst the trees in the garden, but our hearts must be very quiet to hear it. - Minnie Aumonier". "He who plants a tree, plants a hope - Lucy Larcom"

To Landbank Management: Congratulations for a super calendar which gives not only months and numbers but also deep ideas and ideals urgently needed by every Filipino.

Have you seen Landbank's calendar of 2010?
